NASA Phase I SBIR on Distributed Data Mining

MitekAn team has completed NASA Phase I SBIR project in development of Distributed Data Mining algorithms for aircraft FOQA (Flight Operations Quality Assurance) data. The project supports the needs of commercial aircraft operators, NASA, and DOD in transforming vast amounts of aircraft data accumulated in distributed databases into actionable knowledge.

This SBIR project supports NASA Aviation Safety Program and is aimed at transition of data mining research into practical use in the aviation industry. We have developed algorithms for monitoring of FOQA data colllected from large fleets of aircraft. The developed software monitors FOQA data to find units, flight-to-flight trends, and individual flights that show anomalous deviation of the aircraft performance from the rest of the fleet. The bottom line impact is in enabling fuel performance improvements and condition based maintenance. The algorithms could be deployed at airlines for scalable parallell processing of their historical FOQA datasets. The proposed distributed framework could also support NASA and FAA in building national aviation safety resources. Using the developed technology, the airlines, industry vendors, and government can share the mined global knowledge without actually sharing the distributed local data used in its computation. The distributed data mining technology being developed will enable distributed monitoring of large fleets of aircraft making hundreds of flights each taking into account individual variations of aircraft performance and flight-to-flight variations of aircraft load and operation conditions.
