Diagnostics of Crew Abort Condition for Ares I CLV Rocket

In FY2006, MitekAn worked on NASA study of model-based on-line diagnostics of case breach fault in Solid Rocket Motor of Ares I Crew Launch Vehicle (CLV).

Ares-1 CLV

MitekAn studied model-based on-line diagnostics of case breach fault in Solid Rocket Motor of Ares I Crew Launch Vehicle (CLV). This study was carried for NASA Ames Research Center (ARC) as a part of NASA Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD) Engineering and Technology Development Program (ETDP). A multi-model approach to estimation of the rocket motor faults was used. The study results demonstrated initial feasibility of using existing GN&C sensors for detecting and estimating flight dynamics changes caused by thrust augmentation related to case breach. MitekAn has developed a dynamic simulation of rocket ascent and on-line health state estimation algorithms. The simulation and algorithms have been delivered to NASA ARC and are currently used as a testbed for CLV ISHM research.

The results are described in the 2007 AIAA GN&C Conference Paper: Early Detection of Solid Rocket Motor Case-Breach Failure, by Dr. Dimitry Gorinevsky et al.
